How to set up the date on a watch
Short answer: Most watches quick-set the date with the crown in its first pulled-out position. Avoid doing it late in the evening or early in the morning, when the date mechanism is engaged.
How real watches do it
| Tissot quartz with moon phase | Avoid 22:00–02:00. |
|---|---|
| Longines Master Collection Moonphase (calibre L899) | Avoid 20:00–03:00. Turn backwards at position 2. |
| Frederique Constant Slimline Moonphase Manufacture (calibre FC-705 family) | Avoid 21:00–03:00. |
| Citizen Eco-Drive Calendrier Moonphase | Avoid 21:00–24:00. Use the 30th detour for the 31st and the 1st/2nd. |
| Seiko Presage with calibre 6R24 (day, date, power reserve) | No-setting period 21:30–02:00: nothing moves, no harm done. |
| Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonphase (legacy, hand-wound) | Correctors only with the hands outside 7–12. |
| Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon | No quick-set: step the hour hand through midnight. |

Usually the opposite turn sets the date.
⚠️ Avoid 21:00–03:00 on the dial. The date and moon mechanism is engaged then. Move the hands out of that window first (for example to 6:30), or wait.
